Audience Participation

Ok, if it isn't overly obvious from my last post I'm a little pissed off with Apple products, but I'm not gonna go to into a whole "how do I hate thee, let me count the ways" spiel.  Instead, I'm going to rely upon a little audience participation.  Little, old Stevie here needs a caption and I can't decide which one to use....so, look over in the upper right corner and you'll see a new poll...or feel free to comment with your own ideas.

...and again, my apologies to Pat Kassab.

Chocolate Cake, Gameboy, and Me

Just when I thought I was the sole surviving admirer of Picket Fences it would seem....well, to quote Yoda, "There is another."  Honestly, I haven't watched it in a long time, nearly a decade in fact.  The one episode that comes to mind is from the first season where Maxine (Lauren Holly) appears in Mathew's (Justin Shenkarow) bedroom in little more than a black bra and panties.  While bearing gifts she exclaims, "Chocolate cake, Gameboy, and me.  Which would you like first?"

Pretty racy stuff for prime time network television in 1993...even for Fox.  Granted, Edna from The Simpsons isn't quite what I envisioned upon recalling that scene...so I had track it down:

On a completely unrelated topic, I was looking at random Rule 34 people and objects instead of the usual toon-related stuff.  Would you believe it, there was not a single one of Steve Jobs?  The fact that there are well over a hundred relating to Bill Gates and Microsoft didn't come as much of a surprise.

As for a lack of Rule 34, let's just say been there and done that.....and my apologies to Pat Kassab.

Spoof

Lately I've been seeing a lot of men's magazine spoofs across the likes of Paheal and WWOEC.  Naturally, we're talking about Playboy, Maxim, Hustler, the ever popular Playtoon, and the like.  To be quite honest, they are amusing, but it gets a little stale once you start seeing Playtoon versions of every other anime chick or someones otherwise unrecognizable original character.  When the "sexy" versions of non-human Pokémon characters begin to appear on the covers...it's dead...dig a hole, chunk'em in, and kick some dirt in it's face.

I did have an urge to do a Playtoon cover when they were first appearing several years ago, but as time progressed the idea of doing one....well, it just seemed down right stupid.  Then I thought to myself, "Self, why don't you do a couple of everyday, run-of-the-mill magazine covers?"  Well, it was either that or sit around and decide to whom  I should re-gift a novelty Christmas sweater featuring Rudolph and his red, blinking LED nose.

Hopefully, turbolover175, donvito62, fabionei, and Gagala will find these amusing.

Metalhead Christmas

Just to clarify, I do not condone nor endorse music piracy.  I'm actually a fan of the Scottish metal band Alestorm...with all of their pirate themed music.  Yeah, you heard me right....Pirate Metal....as in "Arrrgh matey, I'll keel haul the lot of yuh" kind of pirates.  There's also the thrash metal Swashbuckle out of New Jersey and the folk metal Blackguard from Montreal. This is actually an edited t-shirt design from Alestorm.

While I'm thinking about it, everyone has seen that Christmas light strewn house set to music from the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, but while we're on the subject....

Have a Merry Metal Christmas everyone !!

Last Man Standing

Right around midnight I was craving a 7-11 quarter-pound hotdog and a Slurpee.  What, you don't get that midnight craving from time to time?  On the way home I realized I hadn't checked the mail...I usually don't even bother on Wednesdays since all that ever comes is junk mail and supermarket fliers...but something told me I should do it anyway.

Just like that, my intuition was rewarded....I nice big box from Heavy Metal Magazine containing the long-awaited (and long overdue) Signed Limited Edition version of "Last Man Standing: Killbook of a Bounty Hunter" created by the ever-talented Dan Luvisi.  I've been following his work for a little over two years, about the time he started on LMS, and to call him a talented artist would be....a slap in the face.  He is WAY beyond that.

In a nut shell, Last Man Standing follows the story of Gabrial, the last of a group of 500 genetically enhanced 'Paladin' soldiers who is framed and sent to prison.  He escapes and goes into the future world of New Amerika to find out why he was set-up.  The book isn't so much a graphic novel where it's just an extended, over-sized comic book, but rather a bible-sized scrap book containing everything a bounty hunter might collect along the way....yeah, we're not talkin' baby pictures and pressed flowers here.

So, here I am, flipping through the book...and it's a big ass book, like coffee table sized....when I began reading through the acknowledgments.  I had to stop and do a double-take, "Is that.....me?  Damn, that is me!"  I think I've talked to him maybe once in past six months...he's been pretty damned busy with the book, publication SNAFUs, movie deals, etc, etc...but I must've caught him on an off day.  A few words of encouragement went a long way I guess.

Poll Results

Back in November I started a poll asking if I should change the look of this blog.  Not necessarily a complete slash, burn, pillage, and disembowelment of the entire thing...just a fresher and less cookie cutter appearance.  So, after leaving the decision up to you good-ish people, the results were a little...ummm...under-whelming and certainly no landslide.

30% of you said that I shouldn't change a thing.
30% said that they'd leave the decision(s) up to me.
16% said I should rent a wrecking ball and go to town.
13% said I should just shut my yap and draw something.
3% couldn't make up their mind.

All said and done the ball bounces back to me, so I WILL BE CHANGING the overall look of this blog in the near future.  I wouldn't expect to see anything dramatic until the new year....you know, gotta get that whole family and holidays shit outta the way first.

Stroke My Poll

I've been seriously considering revamping the look of this blog.  I haven't received any complaints about it's overall design, I'm simply bored with the way it looks.  Having looked around at other more prestigious and notable blogs I've come to the conclusion that mine....well, it looks like one of those free web page builders at geocities stopped by to say hello.

Instead of simply pitching the whole thing in the trash and starting over I decided to run a little poll....it's in the upper right corner...and let you decide the fate of things for me.  So, with that said, I'll leave it up to you good (and good-ish) people.

On a completely unrelated note, I just love the art of Ron English.  If Andy Warhol had an slightly evil-ish and demented twin bother, that would be Ron.  He's probably best known for his McDonald's related artwork that was featured in the Morgan Spurlock documentary "Supersize Me", but did you know he also does small-scale film projects too?  Neither did I...up until I ran across this gem:

Turkey Day

Thanksgiving is a bit of a non-event this year.  Normally I'd be at various relatives houses partaking in the usual holiday traditions like everyone else, but I just couldn't pry myself away from the salt mines for any extended period of time.  That and I didn't really feel like driving 150+ miles, getting back after midnight, and then turning around and going to work at 4:30am.....fighting Black Friday traffic I might add.

Holli Would

Now, don't get me wrong.  Who Framed Roger Rabbit was a good flick and Jessica Rabbit had mothers covering the eyes of their children when she made her first appearance, but c'mon....she ain't no Kim Basinger.  Sure, the rabbit one's got all your favorite Disney and Merry Melodies characters...cute, fluffy, familiar, and mind-numbingly predicable.  Cool World on the other hand has...well....all of the cute, fluffy and familiar, but all of it is mind-numbingly skewed and warped.

Spoooon!

Nothing new to report, other than an update in the adult section.

Today is one of those atypical days where I just get to sit around the house and do absolutely nothing.  Other than watching re-runs of Miami Vice and browsing through Modern Drunkard Magazine (yes, it's a real magazine), I happened upon the short-lived live action version of The Tick.  I think I caught one or two episodes of it back in 2001, but...yeah, the entire planet got a little side-tracked that year.  I can't say it's as good as the original Saturday morning animated series from 1994, but it beats the living hell out of most of the prime-time comedy crap that clogs up the airwaves nowadays....Glee, anyone?

On an semi-related note, I don't normally show "work in progress", but I'm going to make an exception for this one.  Within the realm of live-action movies with animated characters there are only two worth mentioning (five if you include Song of the South, Pink Floyd: The Wall, and Tron):  Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) and Cool World (1992).  Just about every artist I know has done the now drawn-to-death Jessica Rabbit, but on rare occasions you'll find someone who has done a bang-up Holli Would.  In real life Kim Basinger (Holli) is still quite the cougar, whereas Kathleen Turner (Jessica, but best known for Romancing the Stone) is...ummm...not.

Late for the Party

Willow and Ms Tinker from the French animated series "A Kind of Magic" (in costume as the Scarlet Witch and Emma Frost).  Most of you have seen this as either CallMePo's entry in 14-bis' Halloween Jam or in it's original commissioned form.  DarkVigilante emailed me the inked version back at the beginning of October and I had every intention of coloring it before All Hallows Eve.....unfortunately I discovered that my old, antiquated editting software absolutely despises anything in .tif format.  So, ten days after Halloween and a couple of format changes later.....

Here Comes The Crescendo!

Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t'was his intent
To blow up the King and Parli'ment.
Three-score barrels of powder below
To prove old England's overthrow;
By God's providence he was catch'd
With a dark lantern and burning match.
Holla boys, Holla boys, let the bells ring.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, God save the King!
And what should we do with him? Burn him!

Vote for Pedro

Naturally, it's election night here in the US of A.  On the national level the media-at-large have dubbed this mid-term "the most important election since the Great Depression", but here in the state of Florida....it's a little more under-whelming.

Let's see here...  For the US Senate I can choose from 'The Turncoat', 'The Extremest Tea Partier in disguise', or 'The former Presidential Endorsee / token black guy'.  In the US House I have my choice of 'The most hated man in Washington' or 'The career state politician'.  And finally, for governor we have 'The Medicare fraudster' or 'The $61B state pension loser'.

Hmmm....decisions, decisions.

Generally speaking, when it comes down to voting for the lesser of two (or three) evils I either choose not to vote in a particular race or I opt for my standard write-in candidate.  As for who I actually voted for....well, that's between me and Jeebus.  Lets just say there were quite a few write-ins this year....my standard write-in candidate being one Elvis Aaron Presley.

I'm joking of course.

Did you know that in order to be a write-in candidate you have to register as such? Unregistered write-in votes have to be thrown out manually. My friends used to write me in for city counsel at-large, and I used to think it was pretty funny. The county voting representative who has to sort your vote for me, Pedro, Elvis Presley, or Groucho Marx from a three-foot-high stack of ballots will undoubtedly find it less amusing than you do.

Roto-What?

Part of a pic I posted last year, but obviously without the toon aspect.  It's really nothing more than coloring over an existing photo...similar to Rotoscoping in traditional cel animation which originally involved tracing over film frame-by-frame.  Rotoscoping is the process used to achieve the look of such films as: A Scanner Darkly (2006), Tron (1982), Heavy Metal (1981), Lord of the Rings (1978), Wizards (1977), and Yellow Submarine (1968).

A Friend Indeed

Nothing new to report except to say that I am now the most recent Friend of Paheal.  As I understand it, most folks request to be on the "A-List".  I however, was invited....so, in that sense, I feel kinda honored.  Special even.

Yeah, yeah...I know...."Shuddup and go draw something.  Friggin' apple polisher!"

Cavalry Leads The Way

I'm sure this isn't quite what you'd normally expect me to do, but I woke up this morning feeling a little nostalgic and banged out a few pieces that are near and dear to my heart.  Once upon a time in a galaxy far, far away I was a Sapper, serving my first four years in the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment (2ACR) (now know as the 2nd Stryker Cavalry Regiment) and the 1st Cavalry Division (1CD).  I did eight years in the active Army then went into the National Guard for another ten years to work on and/or Crew Chief AH-64A Apache, UH-60 Blackhawk, and CH-47 Chinook.  All said and done, I did eighteen years and amassed seven combat tours before retiring in 2007.  There aren't too many people who can say they retired at the ripe old age of 37.

Just Say No

Several individuals (more like a baker's dozen) have recently asked me to color / ink pictures depicting transgendered women...or futa if you prefer.  Personally, I don't understand the fascination of "chicks with dicks" in cartoon form...and I probably never will.  To be clear, I'm not some prudish bible-thumping Jesus-freak or hate-mongering redneck who thinks all homosexuals and transgendered people will burn in the hell fires of eternal damnation.  Ok, I am a redneck, but the previously mentioned doesn't apply to me and would otherwise disagree with my atheist tendencies....weird how that works sometimes.  I'm one of those "live and let live" types....but without the hippie overtones.

Now, as for drawing, coloring, or inking cartoons depicting transgendered women.....I think this sums up my position rather nicely:

Updated 10/13/10:
Well, it would seem that even I am capable of learning something new every day.  Just when I thought dickgirls / futa was some new-ish phenomenon it would seem that futanari (which literally means "dual form") has been around since before the the 17th century.  Prior to 1644CE the appeal of futanari characters portrayed by onnagata actors was very popular in Japanese theatre.  Onnagata are male actors who impersonate women in Japanese kabuki theatre.  It wasn't until the 1990s when futa (in it's hentai form) caught on in the West by way of (depending upon who you ask) it's relationship and similarity to "shemale" pornography and/or the yuri genre.

Now, does any of this mean that futa will suddenly and quite magically become palatable to me?  Don't fuckin' hold your breath.

Where's The Beef?

Truth to tell, I've been wanting to do the Wendy's chick for quite a while.  Errrrr....yeah....that sounds pretty bad.  What I meant was, I've been wanting to color a pic of the Wendy's chick for quite some time now.  In real life she is a caricature of Wendy's founder Dave Thomas' daughter,  Melinda Lou "Wenda" Morse.  Twenty-six years later, I can still picture old Clara Peller saying, "Where's the beef?"

Damnit man!  Talk about taking forever to complete...and I thought the Mrs Monarch one was bad!  Well, four months and two versions later I finally got off my ass and finished this one last night.  Sandy was a little more "big boned" in her original incarnation.  I'm not sure why I gave her such a worried expression....she's probably asking Bob, "Ummm, why am I not drowning?"

Dr Mrs The Monarch

First and foremost I have to apologize to False-Emporor / Neo-Death for taking forever and a day to complete this one.  For one reason or another...mostly complacency with a dash or job related stress thrown in for good measure...I just couldn't seem to get the shadowing down.

So, with that said, a new season of Venture Bros is in full swing.  Naturally, renewals of shows / toons I love tends to bring out the best in me....or the worst in me, depending upon you point of view.

Faces of Flo

Here's a little "method to my madness" one for ya'll.  I couldn't really decide what facial expression to give Flo, so often times I'll do two or three versions of the same piece before shadowing and highlights are added.  More often than not I will stick with whichever version "says 'yes' to me", but sometimes I will combine the best features from the various versions.  I liked the center one with the eyes rolling up in her head, but instead opted for the one on the left since a lot of detail is lost when re-sampling from hi-res (300dpi or more) to an internet-friendly low-res version (200dpi or less, typically 72-150dpi)....this one is reduced from 300 to 250dpi so you can still see the detail.  Likewise, the eyes on the center one would appear as having little of no pupil when re-sampled and the left would be too dark after shadows are added.

Tats

What can I say?  For as much as I would have liked to finish all of the tattoos she has in the original, I got absolutely fed up with doing it.  The more I colored her tattoos the more it looked like she was just a cartoon covered in cartoons....if that makes any sense....so I simplified it "just a bit".

Yaku

Bill Maus did the original sketch and brushed inks on this one back in October of '09 and I picked it up with the intention of coloring it.  Somewhere between my demise on deviantART and the typical daily grind it got pushed to the back burner...and almost made it into the garbage disposal.  I was going through all of my unfinished stuff late last night with the intention of deleting a few things....but ended up finishing the inks on this one instead. I've seen a couple of colored versions, but....ehhhhh....I kinda like it in black and white.

Venturing Into Vice

I've had a couple of people ask what I draw inspiration from for the sketches I color.  Well, T&A is the obvious answer, but in this case I was watching the pilot episode of Miami Vice (circa Sept '84) this evening and (for whatever reason) remembered this sketch of Tatiana Orpheus.  Bikini-clad ex-wife of a cartoon necromancer versus '80s chic south Florida vice cops.  Ok, yeah....that's a bit of a stretch even for me.

I guess we can also call this my "thanks for the 200k hits" pic too since I'm about 700 away.  Damn...it was only this past May when I hit 100k.  "You like me, you really like me!!"

Damnit!!  Sonofabitch!!  Make the hurting stop!!

I got that damned song "Pretty In Pink" stuck in my head....and for a metalhead such as myself it's like the sound of nails on a chalk board, chewing broken glass, and standing in a hail storm all at the same time.

At any rate, I originally intended for the background on the Mrs Possible one to be on this one, but....ehhhh....if it isn't overly obvious by now, I'm a lazy bastard when it comes to scenery.  Why fix what ain't broke?

Retro Cheesecake - Part Two

Back in February I went a little retro.  Ummm, no...I did not start wearing bell bottoms, platform boots (the ones with the zippers up the side), and shirts with collars so big one could take flight in a stiff breeze.  I do have some school pictures circa 1979 wearing exactly that (and a matching "disco vest"), but I've since repressed all memories of the event.  I did however, take a little walk down 1970's Sci-Fi lane and got a one-off print of Lieutenant Sheba from Battlestar Galactica by Andy LaRoy:

Fast forward six months....Andy did a commissioned companion piece of Lieutenant Athena for someone else so I said to myself, "Self, you've gotta get a matching pair."  Enter Erosarts (he's also on DA) to save the day with an extremely high quality print (and reasonably priced to boot).  Sorry, the photo is a little on the dark-ish side:

Kigo and the Red Baron

Not much to say about this one other than it's been sitting in my "wanna color" folder for over two years.  I won't say that I'm beginning to dislike Kigo.  On the contrary, I like many others am still fairly infatuated with the pairing, but I'm simply growing tired of doing them.  At some point I'm sure even old Charles Schultz said something to the effect of, "Fuck this stupid ass non-football kickin' bald headed motherfucker...and his doghouse flyin' beagle too."  ....and then went right back to drawing them.

Call Me Slumpie

I've been in a real creative slump as of late and can't seem to complete (what I normally consider to be) the simplest of works.  I open something, draw maybe two or three lines, color some small and insignificant item, and then....lose all interest in what I'm doing.  It's not that I'm uninspired...I do have some rather interesting things in the works...I just seem to lack the motivation to 'git-r-done'.  Fuck!  I hate that expression!

I dunno, maybe it's just the stresses of everyday life catching up to me....money, work, love life (or lack there of as of late), feelings of under-appreciation, etc, etc.  Yeah, I know what you're saying right about now, "Hey Phil...shuddup, quit whining, stop being such a whoosie, and draw us something to drool over!"  Maybe tomorrow will cheer me up a bit....it's payday after all.

In the mean time I'll leave you something to occupy your time until I can pull my head out my ass:

The long-running web comic "Where Have All The Villains Gone?" by the González brothers ended some time ago, but it is currently being re-run in Spanish.  I got into a short discussion about the series' artwork with Tooner two days ago and mentioned that I'd had this pic in my "wanna color" folder on my desktop for quite a while.  I guess that was all the motivation I needed.

Some characters are destined for super stardom....and some are destined to remain in the shadows unless they take some 'drastic measures'.  Such is the case of poor, under-rated, wide-hipped Peg Pete from Goof Troop.  Hell, Magica De Spell (Duck Tails) and Nani (Lilo & Stitch) have more screen time than poor old Peg.

Leela - De-Tooned

A slightly re-vamped version of Captain Turanga Leela I did some time ago, but (for whatever reason) never posted....and yes, that actually is her full name and title.  Originally it included a de-tooned version of Fry with a Planet Express logo in the background, but I'll be damned if I can find the finished version.  Somewhere between the death of my old computer's hard drive and parting ways with a certain website that I need not mention, it seems to have disappeared.

I had completely forgotten that I'd done this one until I was watching a Sons of Anarchy marathon.  Katey Sagal, best known for her role as Peggy Bundy on 'Married With Children', plays the matriarch of a northern California biker gang.  Likewise, I also completely forgot that she was in a couple of episodes of one of my all-time favorite TV shows, The Shield.  She's the voice of Leela.
