Starting in the1940s student conduct rules referred to "making out" and/or "fondling" as "heavy petting". I'm not sure if the term in is still in use today, but in the late 1980s it sounded pretty damned archaic...as if we were still riding around in 1950s era cars and wearing fashions straight out of
American Graffiti. Naturally, that term is (was) reserved for student-student relationships...student-educator relationship terminology on the other hand tends to go down a different and slightly more legalese-sounding path.
